The club brings vendors into Monmouth County locations. The vendors sell their wares and the Pioneers receive 20% of the proceeds. See this month's calendar of vendors. For more information, contact Jersey Shore Club Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth County The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth County is to make a positive difference in the lives of at-risk children, through a professionally-supported primarily one-to-one mentoring relationship with a caring adult, and to assist the children in achieving their highest potential as they grow to become confident, competent and caring individuals. Social workers at BBBS match children with qualified adults who serve as role models and mentors, and who offer the emotional support and guidance needed for the child to mature into a healthy and productive adult. BBBS is always looking for volunteers for a variety of needs: to be Big Brothers or Big Sisters, transportation for unmatched children to monthly agency events, and for folks to help out with the fundraisers that take place throughout the year such as the Bowl-a-Thon, the Gourment Food and Wine Tasting, and the Golf Classic. AT&T has been supporting BBBS in several ways for many years. AT&T sponsors a corporate mentoring program at the Middletown, New Jersey facility every year. Children are brought to the facility every other week for several months of the year to participate in a technology program planned and run by AT&T employees. Many AT&T employees are Big Brothers and Big Sisters and they assist with many of the fundraising events throughout the year. See the letter of appreciation from Big Brothers Big Sisters. The club assists with the following four annual fundraisers and invites you
to join in the fun: For more information contact Jersey Shore Club or call BBBS directly at 732 544 2224. See the Big Brothers Big Sisters web site. Monmouth County Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Volunteers perform a variety of services for this animal shelter. The Monmouth County SCPA would especially like to have a few more AT&T volunteers so that they can qualify for an AT&T CARES grant. The SPCA needs volunteers to:

Ramps for the Handicapped In conjunction with the Monmouth County Board of Social Services, the Pioneers design and build residential handicapped access ramps for people in the County who need, but are unable to afford a ramp. We have a core group of retired volunteers who do this on an as needed basis. But we need help from active Pioneer members especially on the larger projects. These projects are also a great opportunity for an AT&T CARES group activity. We have done a number of such CARES projects over the past several years, and the groups have been enthusiastic about the experience. Typically we do such a project in one day so the group has the satisfaction of seeing the project through from start to finish. Take a look at a picture from one of our recent projects. If you are interested in volunteering to work on a future wheelchair ramp project as an individual volunteer or to plan a CARES project, call Eric Oberer at 732-389-5397 or email Eric Oberer. He will let you know of planned ramp projects and describe opportunities to participate. Projects are scheduled in the Spring, Summer & Fall. On a typical project, we start at 8:30 am and work until the ramp is finished, usually around 4 pm. All participation is voluntary on a project by project basis. All we ask is that if you commit to work on a project, you show up or let us know a few days in advance that you can't make it so that we can find an alternate volunteer. No experience is required-we provide on the job training. We have rewarding tasks for people (women and men) at all skill levels including someone who has never built anything in their life. We supply materials and most tools, but ask you to bring a hammer and level if possible. You provide your time and labor. Your reward is the satisfaction of helping someone in need. The value of this project is well illustrated in the accompanying Asbury Park Ramp Article. Checkmate of Western Monmouth County Checkmate is a non-profit center in Freehold, New Jersey, which supports the community by providing food, clothing, and contacts for individuals needing shelter. The center focuses on programs that will benefit the community by helping members reach their goals. Checkmate provides a continuous 12-week computer training program offered on Wednesday evenings from 6PM – 8PM to local residents. Participants are required to register for Word and Excel classes in advance. With the increased needs of the students, limited resources have hampered technological advancements (and basics) for them. Students are in great need of software, Internet access, modems and computer upgrades. In spite of these technological deficits, our volunteers strive to instruct students using what is available to enhance the skills of each student that participates in the program. Limited resources to meet the basic needs of the students are the current challenges. We hope YOU will help support our desire to promote computer training in the community and continue strides toward excellence in education to bridge the digital divide. For additional information please contact Tricia Miller at 732-420-6593 West Side Community Center Computer Training Course This is a community project in Asbury Park, New Jersey, involving the teaching of computer skills to primarily members of a largely black and Hispanic community. Since 1992, this has been an ongoing project, taught twice a year (in the spring and the fall). This Pioneer project includes many volunteers from AT&T, Lucent, and Telcordia. The program includes training in introduction to computers, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel. Each program runs from 9:00 AM until 12:30 PM two mornings a week, Tuesday and Thursday, for nine weeks for a total of eighteen classes. Instructors pick a subject of interest and teach one class, plus they can assist the previous class if they want to meet the students and get a better understanding of what materials have already been covered. If you are interested in teaching or just want more information, Contact Gordon Sickel on 732 542-9229 or send mail to Gordon Sickel.Habitat for Humanity Coastal Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, all volunteer organization dedicated to building decent, affordable housing for low-income,working families in the vicinity of Asbury Park and Neptune, NJ (our service area is southeastern Monmouth County). Pick An Angel The Pick an Angel project provides local children and families gifts during
the holiday season. The Pioneers work with agencies in Monmouth and Ocean

purchase these gifts. The Pick an Angel Project supplied 700 gifts to 8 local

The Anti-Poverty Foundation is a non-profit organization that assists those in our local community who are in need but have no place to go for help. These are people who may not qualify for public assistance but who earn too little to support themselves and their families. The organization provides food, clothing, and furniture to help ease the burden for needy families. Help is always needed, for occasional small projects as well as ongoing support. Please contact Sousan Leaalie at leaalie@att.com or 732-420-6979.
